Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Orion StarShoot Planetary Imager and AutoGuider with Aptina MT9V032 Color CMOS Imaging SensorCustomer Review: Windows 7 can't find it Summary: 1 Stars
I've used the original Starshoot for some time with pretty good results. I was delighted when Orion announced the StarShoot Planetary Imager & Autoguider. After receiving the Starshoot (SSPAG) I tried it briefly and couldn't get it to come up on an older Windows XP laptop. We had a long period of cloudy skies and so it was some time before getting the SSPAG online for a test. I tried to get it working on the XP laptop, two Vista laptops and a Windows 7 laptop I bought just for autoguiding and image processing. The Windows 7 MSI laptop is the one I'm upgrading to in the observatory and tried a number of times to get it operating on that one. Finally the unit was returned to Orion and a replacement sent out. I later got the dreaded "we tried it here and it worked fine but we are sending you another one".
The new one arrived and it works on the Vista laptop and that's it. Again, Windows 7 on the MSI laptop does not even see it to load the drivers. The Windows 7 unit works fine with the older StarShoot camera and drivers. Also works flawlessly with a number of USB devices. The SSPAG drivers for Windows 7 are not on the install CD but are downloaded from Orion. The scary part is there is a disclaimer at the top of the download page saying these are Beta drivers and you can participate in the experience by feeding your results back to Orion Support. The concept is good combining a planetary imager with an autoguider but it really would be neat if there were production level drivers with the product. Even better if it worked across the common Windows platforms. I've had a lot of great Orion products and their customer service has always been great. This is the first product from them that hasn't met expectations. However, I'm sure their service department will set things right.
Description of Orion StarShoot Planetary Imager and AutoGuider with Aptina MT9V032 Color CMOS Imaging SensorOne of the most challenging aspects of planetary imaging is getting enough stable atmospheric seeing in order to capture crisp images of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn or other Solar System object. Orion is proud to furnish a solution that not only meets this challenge, but also provides a versatile "two-in-one" imaging solution. Introducing the StarShoot Planetary Imager & AutoGuider, the first dual-purpose camera of its kind from Orion!Powered by a 1/3in format Aptina MT9V032 Color CMOS chip, with a 752 x 480 pixel layout, the "SSPIAG" boasts an incredibly fast frame rate (up to 50 frames per second), allowing you to catch those split-second windows of atmospheric clarity during your planetary imaging sessions. Due to its amazing speed, the SSPIAG is ideal for imaging time-sensitive celestial events such as Moon occultations, solar and lunar eclipses, Space Station flybys and more. The SSPIAG comes with intuitive PHD Planetary software, to give you full control over image capture, stacking, basic processing and file export. In addition, the camera's internal processing features allow you to boost dynamic range and gain, apply noise reduction and more. That's only half the story! As the name implies, the StarShoot Planetary Imager & Autoguider is also a fully functioning autoguider.
