Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Orion StarShoot Deep Space Imaging Camera IICustomer Review: Starshoot DSIC Price point unmatched Summary: 4 Stars
Orion is closing this camera out at $300, a pricepoint you won't come close to elsewhere for a chilled sensor camera (the Meade unit is not chilled, and thus must deal with more thermal noise.) I got my hands on a used one recently (elsewhere), and was very pleased with the software. If you have a reasonable understanding of image processing (think Photoshop) you probably won't even need the nicely prepared tutorial info. Admittedly this is my first experience with an astro imager, but I can't imagine it being any easier. Image stacking is a breeze, with point/click processing options and a de-rotation function to correct for tracking error. On the down side, the camera I played with turned up on the used market, and I found out why--the red channel was dead. However, I jumped immediately to snap a new one up at the closeout price. I doubt the flaw on my used one represents any kind of manufacturing problem. One other consideration is the need for a quality USB2 port; some laptops (including my current one unfortunately) have occasional difficulty keeping up with the data transfer rate. However I understand that a PCMCIA USB card will solve that. If you can still get one at the closeout price, I highly recommend it for an entry level deep space imager. If you have to turn to the used market, be sure you have a return option since they are delicate gizmoes.
Description of Orion StarShoot Deep Space Imaging Camera IIThe StarShoot DSCI II enables anyone with a telescope and a computer to shoot dazzling color pictures of star clusters, nebulas, galaxies, and planets. Embedded in the newly designed machined-aluminum housing is an 8mm diagonal (Type 1/2) Sony CCD chip featuring a 752 x 582 pixel array and 8.6 x 8.3 micron pixels. The larger chip sees a wider chunk of sky and is more sensitive than its predecessor, needing less exposure time to produce gorgeous results. The camera's thermoelectric cooling (TEC) system has been improved to further reduce electronic noise in images. The TEC gives the StarShoot a big advantage over the competition's cam, which is uncooled. With TEC, you get better, smoother images.
