Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Orion SpaceProbe 130ST Equatorial Reflector TelescopeCustomer Review: Awesome telescope! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this telescope as a birthday gift for my husband and he absolutely loves it. I wanted something that was ok for the beginner, but had enough "growing room" that once he really got going he would still enjoy it. This telescope is the perfect combination.
Orion shipped this out really fast even though I only opted for standard shipping. It took less than a half an hour to put together and is easy to move around (from the deck to inside, etc.). The picture of the sky is crisp and bright and as far as I can tell, well worth the money.
Customer Review: A great scope for quick and casual viewing Summary: 5 Stars
I already own an 8 inch GOTO telescope, and although I love it, it is quite an affair to setup, and is quite heavy. I leave my 130 ST scope in the garage, and can be observing in a few minutes. The scope is light but stable, and sturdy. The adjusments are smooth, and with the optional drive, I can track stars, if I will be viewing for a longer time. The planets came sharply into view, so I think it is a great intermediate scope, and one you can take with you on a trip.
(The manual was also very clear)
Customer Review: jump to the moon Summary: 5 Stars
my husband spent about a week deciding on the perfect scope and looking at ALL types, he decided on the orion. it is FANTASTIC!!!!! he is really enjoying seeing everything there is to see. yes, if you buy this, you too will be outside.
Customer Review: Nice performance and price for my first telescope Summary: 4 Stars
This was my first telescope (if you don't count a cheapy refractor I got years ago as a kid-which is OK for the moon only) and I've really enjoyed it. Since it doesn't have a "go-to" mount, it takes some practice to learn to use, aim, and find with the equatorial mount (especially to find and aim as everything you see in the scope and finder is an inverted image). Finding dimmer magnitude objects is more challenging than I thought it would be (there's a whole bunch more objects than you think even through the finder scope!); trying to find Uranus took me some time and a lot of sky to chart consulting.
That said, the quality has been excellent and Jupiter is a great site and already has me thinking of what I might get for a future upgrade. I recommend buying a good quality 6-8 element 6mm eyepiece to increase the magnification (x217 w/ a 2x Barlow lens). This gets it closer to the "useful" max of x260. Overall, good value for the money, but if you don't want to spend a bunch of time hunting for objects (some might say this is part of the fun), I might suggest spending a bit more and get a "Go-to" scope - like the very similar Orion Starseeker 130- but this one doesn't have as good eyepieces included, so budget even more that!
Customer Review: Clarity vs Cost Summary: 3 Stars
The cost of this scope is reasonable but for $30 the Orion SkyQuest XT8 Classic Dobsonian Telescope will allow for more enjoyment and clearer look at the planets and more detail at higher magnification. It is a Point and Push scope that you or your whole family can enjoy, combine it with NightWatch: A Practical Guide to Viewing the Universe you will have years of enjoyment finding space objects like the Andromedia Galaxy (M31) a light glob of stars when viewed with the included 25mm eyepiece and you can see the gases of which our universe was born in the Orion Nebula (look a little south of the belt) Treat yourself right and get the XT8 you wont be dissapointed.
